Walking is one of the easiest and cheapest ways we can be active. Every year in April, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) encourages worksites, families, schools and more to walk. They do this through an event called Walk at Lunch Day. Four Corners supports local businesses and communities to be part of this fun day.
The date for this year’s Walk at Lunch Day is Wednesday, April 25th. To register, go to this site:
https://www.nebraskablue.com/community/national-walk-at-lunch-day You will be emailed a toolkit with flyers, posters, and table tents to help promote your event. Make plans to encourage others at your worksite or school to take a walk this day.
Blue Cross Blue Shield donates money toward the Special Olympics for everyone who walks. In 2017, more than 30,000 Nebraskans walked at lunch. This raised over $5,000 for Special Olympics Nebraska. To join in, you don’t need to be part of BCBS.
Walking is good for your health
Just 30 minutes a day can benefit your health! When done briskly and on most days of the week, walking can:
• put you less at risk for heart disease and diabetes
• help you get to and stay at a healthier weight
• make your muscles stronger
• lessen your stress
Not ready to walk for 30 minutes? Start with 10 minutes.
Don’t like to walk alone? Find a friend to go with you.
Find a safe area, put on your walking shoes, and enjoy the outdoors. If it’s cold, many towns offer places to walk inside. For ideas of places to walk inside, contact Four Corners.
